The 6th Annual NEVY Awards returns on May 9th at the House of Blues, and it'll be a party of intergalactic proportions! Yes, that's right, get your costumes ready for "Episode VI: Return of the NEVYs!"
Hosted by the New England Venture Capital Association (NEVCA) and presented by Bristol-Myers Squibb, the NEVYs truly unites the New England's innovation community. It's a celebration of the entrepreneurs and investors - early stage and late, Tech and Life Science - building the next generation of world-leading companies, right here in New England.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Tobin, Manager of Development and Strategic Initiatives for the NEVCA, to learn more about what we can expect at the NEVY Awards:
What are you are most excited about and why?
This year, instead of celebrating the nominees exclusively, we’re drawing connections across the galaxy of operators and investors; so you’ll learn which VCs invested in which nominees, allowing you to learn more about the ecosystem interactions and see just how connected we all are across sectors and focus areas.
What sets this conference apart from other conferences?
We don’t whip out white tablecloths or schedule boring speeches; we celebrate loudly, unapologetically, and throughout the night with BOTH the tech and life science communities. Plus, there will be a cantina bar right in the middle of the House of Blues, along with a number of local robotics companies demoing their latest products... our ecosystem’s versions of C3PO.
What will set this year’s event apart from previous years?
Honoring the companies alongside their investors will provide a hugely beneficial bird’s eye view of the ecosystem; if you want to know where the connections are and who is investing in companies that excite the investing community, it’s a can’t miss. Not to mention how many intergalactic costumes there will be... hint: it’s not zero.
Are there any new components or features that attendees should look forward to this year?
We’ve never demoed robots at the House of Blues – and we’re not sure anybody else has either. You’ll get a chance to interact and engage with some of the bleeding edge technology that’s being built right here in New England!
How many attendees do you generally receive? Where do they come from? What sectors?
About 1000 VCs, entrepreneurs, and startup community members from all over New England. Since we celebrate startups and their investors across all stages within both Tech and Life Science, it's a pretty diverse crowd.
What can attendees walk away with?
We recognize different kinds of companies at different stages of growth, not to mention investors that might not be that well known yet. So, at the NEVYs you'll learn something- but you'll also get a chance to see some pretty established people letting loose, having fun, and probably dressed up like Luke Skywalker!
