Mechanical Engineering Intern

Working at Walden requires constant innovation as we bridge the gap between small scale producers and a large, growing member base. We are looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to design and implement low cost solutions that streamline our operations without compromising our member experience or raising costs for our producers. This position offers an opportunity to work on a variety of problems from modeling the thermodynamics of frozen products to building automated sorting and portioning systems while learning about the challenges of applying right-sized technology to the sustainable food industry. This role is based in our warehouse in Billerica, MA.


Responsibilities
In this role you will:

  • ● work directly under the mentorship of Walden’s lead systems engineer
  • ● collaborate closely with our operations R+D team to solve a range of challenges in our sorting warehouse and last
  • mile delivery team
  • ● drive the complete design cycle from napkin sketches to implementation
  • ● build 90% of your solutions in house, coordinating with outside machine shops and manufacturers when necessary


Requirements
The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • ● Ready to share a strong portfolio of previous projects designing and building mechanical systems
  • ● Comfortable working with off-the-shelf hardware to build low cost and functional tools
  • ● Highly independent and obsessed with making things that work 100% of the time
  • ● Willingness to jump in and get dirty outside of job role to forward the company and members’ best interest

 

Bonus:

  • ○ Previous experience working with user comfort and ergonomics in mind
  • ○ Experience in a manufacturing or line management role
  • ○ Experience programming with PLC systems
